Rio Miami

On Tuesday, November 28, 1989, Hugh Downs and the crew from ABC's 20/20 were on hand in Miami to film the latest artificial reef sinking by DERM (Department of Environmental Resource Management), the Rio Miami. In fact, Hugh Downs had the illustrious task of being the first person to use the remote-controlled detonator to send the Rio to its new home on the bottom.

The segment was featured on the December 15, 1989 episode of 20/20 and showed clips of the explosion and Hugh diving on the Rio less than 24 hours after the sinking.
